rosacea treatment

1. What does rosacea look like?

The first and main sign of rosacea is blushing or flushing easily causing a red or pink facial skin like a sunburn. This fast blushing is triggered by stress, alcohol, spicy food, and becoming too warm. Some other symptoms are acne-like breakouts that leave pimples and bumps on the face, “sandy” feeling in the eyes (that become red, itchy, and irritated), swollen nose (called rhinophyma) which usually affects men in severe cases, and swollen eyelids.

2. What causes Rosacea?

Some studies suggest that possible causes may be a reaction of your immune system, a bug named H. Pylori that causes infections in the intestines, or a mite, Demodex, that lives on everyone’s skin. Besides, genetics also plays a role since rosacea runs in families.

3. How to know if you have rosacea?

There is no medical test to confirm you have rosacea. However, at Skin Expert Clinic, Dr. Yassine will examine your skin and your eyes to diagnose whether you have rosacea and also eliminate other conditions causing a red face.

4. How to prevent & treat Rosacea?

Pay attention to what is causing your rosacea and avoid it. These may be exposure to heat and sunlight, stress, consuming alcohol or spicy food, and using certain makeup, skin and hair care products, or some medicines. Therefore, Dr. Yassine advises you to protect your skin from the sun by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, avoiding the midday sun, and wearing wide-brimmed hats and sun-protective clothing and sunglasses. It is also essential to follow a rosacea friendly skin care by using a moisturizer daily, applying mild cleanser using only your fingertips, and using a soft towel to pat your face dry after rinsing with lukewarm or cool water. Finally, avoid toners deodorant soaps and scrubbing your skin as they can increase redness.

5. What are the treatment options for Rosacea?

There are various treatment options for rosacea. If you have visible blood vessels and your face is constantly red, a laser or other light-based treatment will suit you, whereas antibiotics or Isotretinoin are a better option if you have bumps and acne-like breakouts. Besides, topical creams that contain metronidazole and azelaic acid are also effective. However, it is of extreme importance to follow an appropriate skincare routine and stay away from the rosacea triggers.

Once you visit Skin Expert Clinic, Dr. Yassine will determine which option is the best for you!
